Conservative talk show host Bill O’Reilly is at it again! Last night while ranting on his Fox News show “The O’Reilly Factor”, the controversial host took it upon himself to break down the problems that are being faced by the black community.
Monday’s edition of O’Reilly’s show featured an interview with Marc Morial, President of the National Urban League. The two had a discussion about some of the black community’s problems, as well as what they felt were solutions. During that conversation O’Reilly took aim at African American leaders like Al Sharpton, Jessee Jackson, and President Obama. According to the conservative TV host, African Americans are being “hustled” by what is currently going on within the “civil rights industry”.
Prior to his exchange with Morial, O’Reilly went into what he thought needed to happen in order for the problems in the black community to be solved. One of the things that he stated was that single black mothers are essentially responsible for many of the problems because of their “personal” choices and lack of discipline. He said that Obama and others refuse to address the problem of black children being born out of wedlock. According to him, “73% of all black babies are born out of wedlock”, and this is what is causing so much violent crime in our communities.
The catalyst for this conversation by O’Reilly was President Obama’s recent speech about the cold blooded murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin at the hands of George Zimmerman. O’Reilly went on to say that “The culture that we have in this country does lead to criminal profiling because young black American men are so often involved in crime. He asked “When was the last time you saw a public service ad telling young black girls to avoid becoming pregnant?”. He then went on to ask “Has President Obama done such an ad? How about Jackson or Sharpton? Has the Congressional Black Caucus demanded an ad like that? How about the PC pundits who work for NBC News?”
O’Reilly also justified Zimmerman profiling and killing Trayvon Martin:
“It was wrong for Zimmerman to confront Martin based on his appearance. But the culture that we have in this country does lead to criminal profiling because young black American men are so often involved in crime.”
O’Rilley ended his rant by stating “White people don’t force black people to have babies out of wedlock. That’s a personal decision. A decision that has devastated millions of children and led to disaster, both socially and economically.”
It seems to me that O’Reilly has taken President Obama’s call for racial sensitivity and understanding and used it to diagnose our community with his racist rhetoric. This monologue was filled with nothing more than the usual finger pointing that comes from the right wingers. Yes, the disintegration of the black family has definitely caused some of the issues that we are facing…But the thing that O’Reilly and his counterparts don’t understand is that families of ALL races are affected by fathers or mothers who leave the home. This isn’t an issue that is only being faced in the black community, white and Hispanic folks get up and walk out on their families too. He sounds ignorant when he talks about the need for a public service ad telling young black girls about not becoming pregnant. Again, teen pregnancy is an issue across the board. That’s not an issue of black and white, that’s an issue of educating ALL teens about the consequences of unsafe sex.
Of course O’Reilly also made no mention of President Obama’s health reform which will provide free birth control for men and women. He also conveniently forgot to mention that violent crime in our country went down 8.7 percent in the country between 2009 and 20012.
Guys like O’Reilly are the reason that we have to stand up for ourselves in this country. We have to stop being silent and let our voice be heard. This sort of racist attitude can not continue.
